Böwlrider: Big röck möuntain highs

15/09/08  ||  Euthanatos

Böwlrider. What the fuck does that even mean? Is it some secret pot-smoking hippie shit? Is it some sort of skateboarding slang? Fuck me if I know. Böwlrider’s music, though, is easier to pin down: dirty rock n’ roll.

This is what their label states, though: With a devotion to the joys of balls-out rock’n’roll that puts bands a fraction of their collective age to shame, the mighty Bowlrider – Brighton’s premier purveyors of booze-swilling, bong-toting Big Rock – are finally ready, willing and able to unleash their monstrous new album ‘Big Rock Mountain Highs’. Oh Really? Well, fuck me, then, how about that. Is there a more retarded, incompetent and just fucking silly bunch of people than those that work in record labels? Is it required to be dense to work in one?

Everything on “Big Röck Möuntain Highs” does sound like music to drink to and music done by drunkards, true. The band reminds me of something, but I can’t quite put my finger on it. They cite Fu Manchu and Motörhead as influences, and sure, that’s a given, but they’re very reminiscent of someone. Who the fuck is it? I can’t remember. My brain cells are fried. No, it’s not from pot, I’m not a fucking hippie. Fuck you. Maybe it’s Alabama Thunderpussy. Or Nashville Pussy. Something with pussy. Anyway, the vocals are very fitting to the overall vibe of the songs and the production, although not great, gives that aura of old school rock, just dirty enough to make it sound credible.

The song writing isn’t exactly memorable nor do I suppose it’s meant to be. I think these guys are just out to have a rocking good time and blast their shit as loud as possible. Hey, all the power to them. The world would be a better place with more good, harmless, passionate rock’n‘roll bands.

The cover: A mountain-top. Fancy that.

6 potheads or skateboarders out of 10.
